Determine which Dial-Up Protocol is Installed on your Machine

Thes pages include detailed instructions on changing the settings for the 3 most common Macintosh dial-up programs.

You can figure out if you have Remote Access, PPP, or FreePPP by:

  • clicking on the Apple icon on the top left hand corner of your Desktop
  • scrolling down to Control Panels
  • Searching for 'Remote Access', or anything containing 'PPP' in it's name
Once you have found Remote Access, PPP, or FreePPP Menu, follow one of these links:

Remote Access:
This is the newest PPP protocol included on Apple machines.  If you have an iMac, G3, G4, Powerbook, etc. you will probably have Remote Access.

PPP:
The version of the PPP protocol that came before Remote Access.  Uses Open Transport.

FreePPP:
Will appear as either 'FreePPP' or '~FreePPP Menu' in your Control Panel.  The oldest of the protocols discussed here.

The example to the right shows a Mac with Remote Access.  It is highlighted in blue.

Some users with older machines may have a program called ConfigPPP.  If you have this program, we recommend calling our office and inquiring about upgrading to FreePPP, or (if your machine is fast enought) upgrading your version of MacOS to one with PPP or Remote Access.
